La AECC resuelve dudas sobre el Covid-19 a los pacientes con cáncer
La asociación da respuesta a las dudas más frecuentes, informando a enfermos y familiares


HUESCA.- A pesar de que el coronavirus es una infección nueva de la que no existen datos sobre su comportamiento en personas con cáncer, sí es evidente que los distintos tipos de tratamientos oncológicos pueden dar lugar a una inmunosupresión e, incluso, el propio cáncer, afectar al correcto funcionamiento del sistema inmune en muchas ocasiones. Por esta razón, es indispensable que pacientes y familiares estén informados sobre recomendaciones específicas para evitar el contagio del Covid-19 o cómo actuar en caso de tener síntomas.




Para ello, la Asociación Española Contra el Cáncer (AECC), ha elaborado una guía que responde a las dudas recibidas a través de sus canales online, telefónico y de sus delegaciones en toda España con el fin de hacerlas extensibles a toda la ciudadanía.


Es importante tener en cuenta que hay muchos tipos de cáncer, y lo que la AECC propone son medidas son generales, por lo que ante dudas concretas el paciente debe consulta al médico que le esté tratando, que es quien conoce su historial clínico y la situación de su enfermedad en este momento, es en definitiva, quien le puede ayudar con preguntas concretas.


Asimismo, se trata de una infección nueva, por este motivo, hasta ahora no hay datos específicos del comportamiento del virus en personas con cáncer.

El Covid-19 es un virus que se transmite por vía aérea, a través de las gotitas que emitimos al hablar, toser o estornudar. Estas gotitas sirven de transporte para el virus, que se encuentra en las vías respiratorias de las personas infectadas. El virus puede encontrarse también en las manos de las personas infectadas o en superficies que estas hayan tocado.


Como ocurre con otras infecciones virales respiratorias, como la gripe, es muy posible que los pacientes con enfermedades crónicas debilitantes o inmunodeprimidos (como ocurre con muchos pacientes con cáncer), se enfrenten a un mayor riesgo de infección y también de complicaciones.

Por todo esto, es conveniente que los pacientes con cáncer sean especialmente cuidadosos. Las precauciones que deben tomar para evitar contagiarse son en este momento las mismas que para la población general, si bien hay algunos matices.


Evitar salir de casa salvo que sea imprescindible, el contacto físico y viajar y estar en espacios públicos. Hay que lavarse las manos frecuentemente con agua y jabón durante al menos 20 segundos, o bien con un desinfectante para manos a base de alcohol, y no tocarse los ojos, la nariz y la boca en general, pero, sobre todo, antes de lavarse las manos.

Usar pañuelos desechables y tirarlos luego a la basura, y limpiar objetos y superficies de la casa/oficina regularmente con toallas o aerosoles de limpieza para el hogar.

Además de seguir una correcta alimentación, es recomendable el uso de mascarilla en pacientes que presenten síntomas respiratorios sospechosos.

Si algún paciente con cáncer sospecha que puede haber estado en contacto con el coronavirus, desde la AECC indican que debe seguir la recomendación de las autoridades sanitarias, llamando al 112. "Recuerde que estamos ante una emergencia sanitaria y, si se puede, debe evitarse ir directamente al hospital o centro de salud en estos momentos", indican desde la asociación.


En caso de que el enfermo de cáncer tenga de manera súbita fiebre, tos, dolor de cabeza o dificultad para respirar, tiene que consultar con su médico especialista si su situación se lo permite. "La opción preferible es el teléfono, indicando claramente no solo su situación como enfermo de cáncer, sino cualquier otra patología crónica que pueda tener, así como los tratamientos que toma".

"Su médico le preguntará por sus síntomas, por dónde ha estado en los últimos días y con quién ha tenido contacto. Siga sus instrucciones y recuerde de nuevo que la asistencia a los servicios de urgencias debe quedar preservada para los pacientes que presentan síntomas graves", insisten desde la AECC.


Si la persona se tiene que desplazar para recibir tratamiento o ir a la consulta, debe consultar a su médico, "que es la persona que conoce su historia y podrá ayudarle y darle unas indicaciones claras".

El coronavirus es una infección muy nueva, por lo que aún no hay información especifica sobre ella en pacientes con cáncer. Lo que sí se sabe, y se tiene muy estudiado, es el riesgo de infecciones en general en estas personas, "por eso le rogamos que tome todas las medidas descritas y que sea especialmente cuidadoso y se vigile, especialmente si está usted recibiendo tratamiento activo", apuntan desde la asociación.


Ante todo esto la AECC recuerda "una última vez la importancia que nuestros comportamientos individuales y el seguir las normas establecidas por la autoridades sanitarias tienen para frenar esta pandemia cuanto antes y también la importancia de estar bien informados y consultar siempre fuentes oficiales".
